Service Project | Kearns Highway Litter Cleanup

Project Details:

Picking up trash alongside Route 0172 mile markers 0 to 2 alongside 5600 W managed by the Utah Department of Transportation running north/south through Kearns and West Valley.

I. Volunteering for litter cleanup establishes RECIPIENTS AGREEMENT to the following provisions:

  1. UDOT employees shall be assigned by the Region Representative, if deemed appropriate, to provide overall supervision of the project.;
  2. Volunteer groups must provide responsible supervision as determined by the Region Representative, or designee, to properly control the activities of the group.;
  3. The minimum age for volunteers shall be fourteen (14) years old.;
  4. Volunteers must stay off the traveled area of the roadway.
  5. If a traveled area is to be crossed, it must be done by the group together, with proper flagging or supervision.;
  6. Volunteers shall not cross traveled areas of Interstate Freeways;
  7. The State, including employees thereof, shall be held harmless in the event of any accident to any member of the volunteer group during the course of the project.;

II. THE UTAH DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION (UDOT) AGREES TO:

  1. Furnish volunteers with safety vests as deemed necessary by the Region Representative. (These safety vests must be returned at the end of the project.);
  2. Furnish litter bags. Contact the Region Representative a few days prior to your project to pick up bags.;
  3. When litter bags are filled, they will be placed along the shoulder of the road. The bags will be picked up by UDOT personnel and equipment.;
  4. Provide necessary signs and warning devices, if appropriate.
  5. Conduct safety briefing or issue safety instructions to the group, as appropriate, prior to commencement of the project.;

If you see the following items during your cleanup do NOT pick them up:

  • Broken glass
  • Syringes
  • Dead animals
  • Heavy objects
  • Hazardous materials
  • Drugs and drug paraphernalia (do not touch, contact local Police Department for proper disposal and contact your UDOT representative to report the finding)

We are expecting warm weather so please come dressed accordingly with good walking shoes, sunscreen, and sunglasses if preferred. In addition, volunteers are asked to wear long sleeved clothes, close-toed shoes, and bring gloves if possible.

At the Utah Department of Transportation, they keep Utah moving. They aim to give all users of the transportation system choices, so people can get where they want, when they want, in the way they want – safely. Their mission is clear: Enhance quality of life through transportation. Keeping Utah Beautiful is UDOT’s volunteer litter pick up program. This program has replaced the Adopt a Highway Program. Volunteer groups may sign up and perform one-time litter clean up events that are coordinated through UDOT’s regional offices.
